Using RTLS Technology to Minimize the Risk of Ebola Exposure

October 3, 2014

The news about a patient diagnosed with Ebola and the potential for exposure to patients and hospital personnel can make any healthcare leader anxious. And it should.

Fortunately, advancements in technology – such as Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) – can support healthcare providers with rapid and effective containment of communicable diseases.

The Intelligent InSites platform specifically has a use case application designed to provide proximity and duration reporting in infection control situations such as this. For example, when a patient is positively tested for a virus, such as Ebola, staff can instantly generate a report identifying everywhere that patient has been in the hospital, as well as all patients, staff, and equipment that were in the same location at the same time and for what duration they were in contact.

Staff can use that information to initiate the disease control protocols established by the hospital, screening exposed personnel or patients, and the provision of antiviral treatment.

The InSites system also provides reports that help risk management personnel analyze infection patterns and assist with compiling data requested by government agencies, such as Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).  This not only protects patients and hospital employees, but it also increases the safety of the entire community.

Sincerely,
